Swedish synth pop dream: Me & Melancholy's ‘Naive’ floats away

Like a feath­er glid­ing gently through the air, the new song ‘Naive’ by Me & Melancholy floats through my ears and leaves me in a world of bit­ter­sweet synth pop.

With ‘Naive’, the Swedish band has cre­ated a mas­ter­piece of decep­tion. At first glance, the track seems so light and care­free that you almost fail to hear how com­plex it actu­ally is. But it is pre­cisely this com­bin­a­tion of appar­ent sim­pli­city and hid­den depth that fas­cin­ates me. The synth sounds and effects sound refresh­ingly new and unique to me – a real rar­ity in the elec­tron­ic music scene, which is often char­ac­ter­ised by repetition.

I was par­tic­u­larly impressed by the sound­scape that Me & Melancholy have cre­ated here. It's like wan­der­ing through a foggy dream in which memor­ies and real­ity become blurred. The lyr­ics per­fectly emphas­ise this feel­ing when they talk about search­ing for some­thing real in the midst of change. I think the band has man­aged to cap­ture this emo­tion­al ambi­val­ence musically.
