Against the grain: Blackbook and the perfect soundtrack for outsiders
The title track, "Different," completely resonates with me, both sonically and lyrically. I can perfectly identify with the lyrics, as the song once again addresses the theme of "being different", which plays such a central role in Blackbook's world. Anyone who, like myself, was more of an outsider at school will understand this song perfectly.
I'm particularly struck by the line "It's a blessing, not a curse", you only truly grasp that when you've left all that behind and consistently forged your own path. We're swimming against the current here, and we're definitely not dead fish!
The sound is very harmonious and crisp typical Blackbook. What I especially like are the subtle electronic industrial sounds. These particular nuances sometimes remind me of Depeche Mode's productions from the 90s. So, if you're "rather go crazy than mad", you'll find your perfect soundtrack here. Ommar Gutierrez's handmade music video is also fantastically staged and perfectly supports the theme.

Lyrics of "Blackbook – Different"
Different
Misunderstood
Noone notices your pain
You try to be good
And play along with all their games
But if anybody ever underestimates you
Make sure that it's last thing that they ever do
That's what you are
Different, different
Not better or worseD
ifferent, different
It's a blessing not a curse
Lend me your eyes
Let me show you where to look
Between the lines
It is written in the book:If anybody ever takes advantage of you
Make sure that it's last thing that they ever do
That's what you are
Different, different
Not better or worse
Different, different
It's a blessing not a curse
Better be angry than sad
Rather go crazy than mad
Different, different
Different, different
It's a blessing not a curse
Different, different
Not better or worse
We're just a little different
It's a gift, it's not a curse
It's a gift, it's not a curse
