The driv­ing intro to ‘Ever So Slowly’ by Brittany Bindrim ini­tially sounds like the start­ing gun for a dynam­ic synth pop fire­works dis­play – but after the first few beats, I real­ise that the song is delib­er­ately play­ing with my expect­a­tions. What sounds like the pre­lude to a dance track sur­pris­ingly sticks to a slow beat, almost like a bal­lad. For me, the depth of this slow burn­er only really unfolds after sev­er­al listens.

Bindrim opens her album ‘Counterpoison’ with ‘Ever So Slowly’ and takes a bold step: instead of work­ing with catchy hooks from the out­set, she relies on a dirty, intense ton­al­ity that is very much in the spir­it of Depeche Mode's ‘Barrel Of A Gun’ (Ultra). The sounds are multi-layered and invite me to savour every detail – from the power­ful bass­line to the deep synths that cre­ate a dark, almost oppress­ive atmosphere.

Thematically, the lyr­ics remain alleg­or­ic­al, break­ing with reli­gious sym­bols and dark verses that evoke a sense of decay and loss of con­trol. Lines like "Destroying temples and help­less souls / And you sing “holy, holy!”" cre­ate, in my opin­ion, an oppress­ively hon­est ref­er­ence to social shifts, which Bindrim pro­cesses lyr­ic­ally in a power­ful and uncon­ven­tion­al way.
