Enjoy The Silence: One of the better versions in the sea of DM covers
I make no secret of it: I love Depeche Mode. "Enjoy The Silence" is undoubtedly a fantastically produced synth pop song, but I have to be honest — I've fallen a little out of love with it. This is partly because the track is constantly on the radio, and partly because it's probably the most covered Depeche Mode song of all time. It also annoys me that outsiders often reduce the band to just this one track. Normally, I rarely give cover versions by "the usual suspects" a chance anymore.
But the Swedish producer Magnavolt has done an excellent job with it. Admittedly, the intro is a bit slow and takes a moment to get going. But when the fat beat kicks in at 0:36, the sound really hits you hard and packs a punch. That's exactly the moment my skepticism vanished.
An absolute highlight for me is Megan McDuffee's soft female vocals. Her voice provides a wonderful contrast to the track's powerful foundation. Ultimately, I can't help but admit: Magnavolt has delivered a truly great cover version here. Even though I believe the song won't last forever and will probably eventually get lost among the countless other interpretations, it definitely remains one of the better versions. The only downside is the generic music video featuring footage by Piotrek Naumowicz – that's unfortunately not really my cup of tea, but musically speaking, the song really grabbed me.
