Between Nihilism and Goosebumps: The Powerful Opening of Never Knows Best
Let me just say it straight away: "Something From Nothing" gave me a real "wow" effect. Never Knows Best deliver a seriously cool, fresh sound here, and its vibe grabbed me immediately. The blend of dark synth-pop and dark wave is absolutely brilliant and, in my opinion, falls somewhere in the same league as William Control and Straight Razor.
Even the thrilling intro had me on the edge of my seat – this playful, mysterious melody is simply amazing and reminds me a lot of Light Asylum's big hit "Dark Allies". When the bass drum kicks in with that powerful punch in the intro, I know instantly: something big is coming. After about nine seconds, a wobbly synth line in the style of Human League's "Don't You Want Me" joins in – that gives me goosebumps! Even the guitars, which I often find off-putting, are subtly placed here and blend in seamlessly.
The guitars are perfectly placed and fit in perfectly. The dark vocals perfectly suit the genre and convey the lyrical question of whether, in the absurdity of it all, we are merely carbon or capable of creating "Something from Nothing." The song powerfully captures the oscillation between hope and nihilism. This debut from the Americans is fantastic. I'm extremely curious to see what will follow this evolution of their sound and whether they can maintain this high level.

Lyrics of "Never Knows Best – Something From Nothing"
How long will it take
To escape from this charade
Am I breathing?
How can we turn and face another day
That only ever seems to move away
Away from here
Take me back now
Help me understand
How do we forget
How do we pretend
Hold me close
Let it move too slow
It’s you and me, it’s all we know
It’s you and I again
How can we comprehend?
We twist and turn
As autumn burns
Will we learn to make
Something from Nothing?
Is this what we call sane?
How long will we keep playing this game
Are we feeling?
Is this all there is to see?
The empty space inside of me?
Nothing past absurdity
Have we seen all there is to see?
Are we nothing or something
Are we cold and honest
Are we forgotten
Or is there something more than carbon
Something or nothing else here
