Between the dance floor and toxic intimacy
To me, ‘Sugar’ by Nyiko sounds like a danceable frenzy that nevertheless carries a certain heaviness. The song is clearly synth pop, but its darker undertones make it almost like dark pop – very catchy and yet a little bittersweet.
The synth sounds immediately drew me in, right from the first beat. The consistent rhythm is clearly at home on the dance floor, while the playful melodies strongly remind me of Glass Spells or Artemas. What I like is the balance: on the one hand, it's danceable and instantly catchy, but on the other hand, the lyrics have a certain dark aura. When Nyiko sings about ‘sugar’, the sweet image seems to contrast with the toxic intimacy and nocturnal stories that are hinted at here.

Lyrics of "Nyiko – Sugar"
You take the call
Late at night
You don’t need to ask if it’s alright
You wash it off
And put your face back on
You won’t get to sleep until the dawn
You get a car
To take you there
No right or wrong
All is fair
All is fair
Oh sugar
So sweet
Oh sugar
My favorite treat
Oh sugar
Baby
Oh sugar
Oh sugar
Oh I wonder
Where you go
But that information is on a need to know
So you say
That it’s a drag
But this is how you get your bag
And I understand
You get a car
To take you there
No right or wrong
All is fair
All is fair
Oh sugar
So sweet
Oh sugar
My favorite treat
Oh sugar
Baby
Oh sugar
Oh sugar
