Raf Duran – Undecided

Between decision and standstill: Raf Duran's ‘Undecided’ touches in its own way

Raf Duran - Undecided (Cover artwork)“Undecided” strikes a chord with me – not because the song is perfect, but because it doesn't want to be. It thrives on its uncertainty, its inner tension, and that's exactly what makes it so interesting to me. The song is the opener for the 3‑track EP of the same name, “Undecided”. However, I have to say that the other two songs are more like b‑sides to me.

Raf Duran manages to translate a topic like decision paralysis into music in such a way that I immediately feel drawn in. Lyrically, it's about self-doubt, feeling like a stranger to yourself, and the fear of doing the wrong thing – "Choices I make / Will haunt me forever" is the central line for me. That line really resonates.

What surprised me was that despite the almost ballad-like mood, the song never feels sluggish or monotonous. On the contrary, the dynamics and dramatic structure give the track a depth that I often find lacking in this genre. For me, this shows that ballad does not have to be synonymous with minimalist.

Musically, ‘Undecided’ reminds me of a modern homage to the early Pet Shop Boys with a touch of Depeche Mode's ‘Clean’, but with a fresh, contemporary twist. What bothers me a little, though, are the vocals. They could be clearer for my taste – less electronic distortion, more genuine feeling. Especially in a time when everything is being digitised (think AI), I long for more authenticity in singing.

The video underscores the mood of the song very well. Minimalistic, calm, but harmonious – a visual extension of the music that makes me feel like I'm not alone with my thoughts when I watch and listen to it.

Lyrics of "Raf Duran – Undecided"

A stranger to myself
How can I choose
Overwhelmed

Choices I make
Will haunt me forever
I'd rather remain at the crossroad

Remain undecided
Undecided
Undecided
Undecided
For now

A stranger to myself
How will I know
Turn to stone

Decisions made
Can lead to regret
I'd rather remain at the crossroad

Remain undecided
Undecided
Undecided
Undecided
For now

Choices I make
Will haunt me forever
I'd rather remain at the crossroad

Remain undecided
Undecided
Undecided
Undecided
For now
