&Tilly – Maybe I'll Stay In A Different Shadow

Minimalism with depth – &Tilly's whispers between closeness and distance

&Tilly - Maybe I'll Stay in a Different Shadow (Cover artwork)Even the first bar of "Maybe I'll Stay In A Different Shadow" sounds like an inner monologue on ice – cool, distant and yet full of depth.

The synthesizers are anything but standard. They remain pleasantly varied without being intrusive – just my thing when I want to stay away from repetitive club loops. The whispered vocals in this particular track are very appealing. They seem more like an inner retreat than a performance – almost as if &Tilly is talking to herself and I'm allowed to listen. This creates a noticeable intimacy and distance at the same time, which fits perfectly with the title and the overall feel of the track.

The black-and-white video has a strong visual impact on me. It underlines the emotional inaccessibility of the song – and that's exactly what I like. At 2:36 minutes, the track is right on point. Any longer and it could have quickly become monotonous for me, but this way everything remains compact and effective.

Lyrically, I'm particularly moved by the line "You know you, I forgot me". For me, it describes a feeling of self-alienation that runs through the whole song. Emotionally hard, but not artificial. What I find missing, however, is a certain catchiness – that little hook that grabs me on first listen. As a single, the song is therefore a bit unwieldy for me. But that's also where its strength lies: for listeners who are looking for more than the typical pop moment, this is a little work of art.

Lyrics of "&Tilly – Maybe I'll Stay In A Different Shadow"

I'd stay here
But how to see?
You will hurt
I'm hurting me
I'm too low
Maybe I'll growl
Maybe I'll stay
In a different shadow

And you can be here
My money's on trains
So much work
So many ways
So many days

But how to see?
I'm hurting me
Maybe I'll growl
Maybe I'll stay
In a different shadow

Not mine
Not ours

Waiting
To be pushed
Waiting
Thoughts ambushed
Waiting
Pulling through
Waiting
Still waiting

I'd stay here
But how to see?
You will hurt
I'm hurting me
I'm too low
Maybe I'll growl
Maybe I'll stay
In a different shadow

Can't stay here
I just can't see
You know you
I forgot me
I'm too far
Maybe I'll scar
Maybe, get used
To a different shadow

I'd stay here
But how to see?
You will hurt
I'm hurting me
I'm too low
Maybe I'll grow
Maybe I'll stay
In a different shadow
