XHER – Sobriety

Minimalist, powerful and painfully honest – XHER's ‘Sobriety’

XHER - Sobriety (Cover artwork)When I hear ‘Sobriety’ by XHER, I feel transported directly into a dark, minimalist soundscape. The song is a prime example of how dark wave is currently developing: stripped back, but at the same time powerful and full of energy. The beat drives me forward, danceable, almost hypnotic, while the clear voice of XHER has a direct effect on me that I have rarely experienced so intensely. The lyrics, full of pain and unsparing honesty, really get under your skin. Lines like "I don't need your love, I don't need your care" or "We can't be friends, lovers, nothing" reflect the raw intensity of a reckoning that goes far beyond the personal. Even if the lyrics sound a little too cold-blooded at one point or another in my opinion

XHER's ‘Sobriety’ reminds me of the spirit of young bands like Artemas and Incirrina, who also bring the melancholy, dark sound into the here and now. But it's not just the Zeitgeist that speaks here – it's an individual voice that is simultaneously fragile and powerful. The song is a cathartic release, with every note and every beat reflecting XHER's themes of identity, heartbreak and resilience.

What particularly strikes me is the clear production. Despite the minimalist arrangement, no space is left empty, every note is in place. And then there are the vocals: they are razor sharp, each word seems like a targeted stab that hits the listener. ‘Sobriety’ is not just a song – for me it is a statement. It shows that less can be more when emotions are conveyed so raw and unadorned.

Lyrics of "XHER – Sobriety"

You’ve said enough
My turn

Get a grip

There’s nothing to be fixed
All the things i said in my apologies are
Sadly factual

I dont need your love
I dont need your care
You’re better off alone
I think im better sane

Sobriety
Take your ear plugs out of your ears baby
Sobriety
Drop my things at my mailbox darling
Sobriety
I can’t remember the good stuff lately
Sobriety
The damage is done

I’m disilusioned

You’re so full of yourself
Literally so sick
Truth, I wanna seek the truth
How dare u tell me that I’m fake
That stupid look on your pretty face
Stuck in your car in front of my gate
Always smarter than me huh?

I know who you are now
You’re dead to me

Listen!

And your drugs drugs drugs
And your downs downs downs
You’re so far far far
Wishin upon a star

Get back to reality!

We can’t be friends, lovers, nothing
No, we cant
Forget about me

Take your ear plugs out of your ears baby
Drop my things at my mailbox darling
I can’t remember the good stuff lately
The damage is done

Sobriety
Take your ear plugs out of your ears baby
Sobriety
Drop my things at my mailbox darling
Sobriety
I can’t remember the good stuff lately
Sobriety
The damage is done.
