Vioflesh – Feel Fake

Romantic darkness with a touch of witch house

When I listen to Vioflesh's new song "Feel Fake", I imme­di­ately feel trans­por­ted into a dark, romantic sound­scape. The track from Chile is a multi-faceted blend of dark pop and dark wave, which seems quite shal­low to me at first glance – but that's exactly what makes it a suc­cess­ful intro­duc­tion for those who might oth­er­wise have little to do with dark wave. The sound remains dreamy and almost float­ing, and at the same time I feel this touch of witch house, which gives the song some­thing mys­tic­al without becom­ing too esoteric.

What both­ers me a bit, though, are the many vocal effects. For my taste, less would have been more here, as I would have liked to hear the raw emo­tion in the singer's voice more clearly and undis­tor­ted. For me, the effects dilute the authen­ti­city that the lyr­ics so strongly evoke.

The lyr­ic­al con­tent of "Feel Fake" per­fectly matches the sound: lines like "Silence is bet­ter when the feel­ing fades" or "You cre­ate your own heav­en and hell" allow us to delve deep into the top­ic of inner con­flict. It's about hav­ing the cour­age to break away from what feels wrong and keep­ing a clear head. I feel a sub­lim­in­al mel­an­choly that nev­er seems cheesy. Rather, the lyr­ics reflect the feel­ing that Vioflesh itself describes as "dis­con­nec­ted in a world that feels fake" – a strong impulse for those who find them­selves in an increas­ingly dehu­man­ised world.
