Electronic dark wave with a ray of hope
With ‘Afterlife’, Omar Doom has once again delivered an absolute cracker. The track gets off to a wonderfully sombre start, carried by Omar’s dark vocals, which conjure up an intensely gloomy atmosphere. But at exactly 0:28, this darkness suddenly dissipates in the chorus: the song literally begins to shine, bridging the gap between oppressive dark wave and melancholic synth pop, carrying a palpable glimmer of hope.
The chorus itself is fantastically catchy and had me completely hooked from the very first second. Sonically, Omar adds brilliant touches, in particular, the squeaking, chirping sound in the transition from the first chorus to the second verse sticks in your mind straight away. The bridge in the middle is also something special. It skilfully builds the tension once more and brings a welcome change of sound into play.
Visually, the music video takes it up a notch. Strikingly chosen imagery, magnificent costumes and deep red lighting set the song off perfectly. Omar’s performance is simply outstanding. It’s incredibly fun to watch him celebrate the lyrics and beat with spot-on facial expressions.
