A mysterious dark wave trip with rough edges
"Dancing In The Dark" by Penthouse Plants is a dark wave song for me, which in many ways sounds like a tribute to the genre. Even on first listening, I was reminded of the early works of “The Merry Thoughts” (Psychocult), which also combined an enigmatic, dark sound with lots of electronics. And yet Penthouse Plants manage to give this soundscape its own unique touch.
What strikes me immediately are the analogue synths, which are skilfully used and give the piece something distinctive. For me, they are the heart of the song: every note seems carefully chosen and fits seamlessly into the mysterious mood that makes ‘Dancing In The Dark’ so fascinating.
But, and this is my personal feeling, there are also elements that somewhat disrupt this mystical mood for me. The drums and guitar parts with a touch of goth rock seem a bit too present for me at times, almost as if they wanted to compete with the synthesizers. I think sometimes less would have been more here, to give the synthesizers the space they deserve. If you like dark, electronic sounds and don't mind a bit of rough edges, you'll definitely find what you're looking for here.
