When melancholy becomes a soundtrack
Some songs don't just feel like music, they feel like a state of mind. ‘Tears Fall’ by Denuit is just such a piece. It drags along slowly and mournfully, as if it were almost collapsing under the weight of its own melancholy. The minimalist, electronic sound is not intrusive, but subtly oppressive. Small, spooky effects create an almost ghostly atmosphere that immediately captivates me.
Lis Araignées' vocals are the emotional centre of the song. Her voice sounds both distant and deeply compassionate. The lyrics reinforce this ambivalence: “Tears fall, laughing with one voice. One day we're fine, then everything stops.” – an interplay between moments of hope and the sudden, inevitable end. The last line in particular, "Les larmes ne mentent pas" (tears don't lie), stays with me: a bitter truth that ‘Tears Fall’ perfectly conveys.
I think that with this song, Denuit have created an oppressive beauty that hurts in the best possible way. Those who love dark wave will not be able to – and will not want to – escape this musical sadness.

Lyrics of "Denuit – Tears Fall"
You have the taste of a rainy night,
Deep in your eyes.
But in your arms,
Everything becomes silent
And my heart beats.
Tears fall
Laughing with one voice.
One day we're fine
Then everything stops.
You have the taste of a rainy night,
Deep in your eyes.
But in your arms,
Everything becomes silent
And my heart beats.
Tears fall
Laughing with one voice.
One day we're fine
Then everything stops.
Je t’aime,
Mais comment faire si je ne m’aime pas ?
Tears fall
Laughing with one voice.
One day we're fine
Then everything stops.
Les larmes ne mentent pas.
