Glass Spells – Venom

Between lust and poison

‘Venom’ grabbed me right away – this track by Glass Spells from the album ‘Crystals’ shows once again how clearly the band has defined its own sound: synth pop that is both eleg­ant and power­ful. I espe­cially like that you can hear that typ­ic­al Glass Spells vibe again here. At the same time, the whole thing sounds a little dark­er than usu­al to me, although I admit that the per­fectly pro­duced music video prob­ably rein­forced my perception.

For me, the vocals have some­thing seduct­ive, almost threat­en­ing about them, which fits per­fectly with the lyr­ic­al level. Lines like "The venom of your affec­tion" or "The silence of your rejec­tion" rein­force this dark­er tone and make it clear that this is not about pleas­ing sur­faces, but about a tox­ic desire that crackles. I find this mix­ture of dance­ab­il­ity and heav­i­ness extremely suc­cess­ful, and it fits with what the band itself describes as ‘dark, dan­cey with sul­try female vocals’.

But as enthu­si­ast­ic as I am about the over­all pack­age, I would like to see Glass Spells devel­op their sound even fur­ther in the future. ‘Venom’ sticks to the famil­i­ar style, which I basic­ally love, but a few fresh ele­ments or a small son­ic twist might give the songs even more depth. Nevertheless, for me, this track remains a high­light, espe­cially because the band's own sense of image and visu­als can­not be over­looked. The album cov­er of ‘Crystals’ is simply fant­ast­ic and com­ple­ments the music in a way that shows me that Glass Spells have the whole pic­ture in mind, not just the songs.
