Shonalika – Maggot

Danceable, dark, uncompromising: “Maggot” in self-decay

Shonalika - Maggot (Cover artwork)‘Maggot’ is one of those tracks that hits me right away with full force – uncompromising, clear, snotty, exactly my thing. Shonalika delivers a synth pop track with an electroclash touch that definitely belongs in the club with its 148 BPM.

What immediately won me over was the production: the balance between beat, synths and vocals is spot on. Nothing feels overloaded or contrived. The beat is dry, driving, not too playful – and therefore all the more danceable. For me, it works perfectly. Especially because the vocals are so distinctive: slightly rough, with just the right amount of distance and emotion.

Lyrically, the song delves deep into physicality and decay – "As the maggots thrive" is not just a dark image, but sums up exactly that mixture of disgust and honesty that I love about electronic music. The track is brimming with suppressed anger, pain and a certain catharsis. It feels real to me.

But – and I mean this honestly – towards the end, the track loses some of its tension for me. The last minute drags on, the chorus repeats itself too often and feels very repetitive. A crisp radio edit would have worked wonders here. Nevertheless, ‘Maggot’ is a strong statement for me, both sonically and aesthetically.

Lyrics of "Shonalika – Maggot"

The first time I danced
With my hair flying
Bloodied but breathing
Grateful to be alive

The next time I danced
With my heart failing
All my flesh decaying
As the maggots thrive

It takes time to know
It takes time to show

You can tell yourself
Everything’s just fine
But the body
The body won’t lie

It takes time to show
It takes time to know

Why the shaking limbs
Why the swollen mouth
Better watch your skin
Cos it’s breaking out

The next time I went
With my nerves fraying
Last light fading
Right behind my eyes

The next time I went
With my skull buzzing
Cortisol crushing
As I die inside

The next time I went
With my skin trailing
Gashes gaping
In the sordid light

The next time I went
With my chest broken
All my ribs split open
As the insects fly

Maggot, maggot, maggot
As the maggots
As the maggots thrive

Maggot, maggot, maggot
As the maggots
As the maggots thrive
