Vioflesh – Midnight

A ghostly dance between loneliness and hope

‘Midnight’ by Vioflesh imme­di­ately cap­tiv­ated me – or rather, it drew me into a cold, ghostly abyss that feels like a mix­ture of loneli­ness and long­ing. The song is a prime example of mod­ern dark wave sound from Chile: mel­an­choly melod­ies, hyp­not­ic syn­thes­izers and an atmo­sphere that lies over everything like a frosty veil. The lyr­ics – espe­cially lines like "Let's write our his­tory out­side of time" – rein­force this feel­ing of seek­ing refuge on a silent night.

For me, how­ever, the vocals are a double-edged sword. Although they blend har­mo­ni­ously into the sound, the effects are at the lim­it of what I per­son­ally find pleas­ant. A little less pro­cessing would have done the song good. Nevertheless, ‘Midnight’ man­ages to grab me emo­tion­ally – mainly through the mix­ture of cold­ness and a hint of hope that res­on­ates in the lyrics.
