When synth pop embraces hell
With their song “Hell”, Never Knows Best deliver a dark synth pop track that clearly bears the hallmarks of dark wave and post-punk. The sound is crisp and pleasantly bass-heavy, instantly creating a dense atmosphere. I find the extremely varied vocals particularly fascinating; they lend the verses and the chorus their own distinctive, striking character.
Lyrically, the song tackles themes such as self-doubt, emotional entanglements and self-imposed darkness, with lines like “Is this hell? We can’t find our way out / We built it ourselves” aptly reflecting a sense of being lost. Ultimately, this track builds on the atmospheric style that I’d already come to appreciate back in January with their release ‘Something From Nothing’, and seamlessly maintains that standard. The result is an extremely catchy synth pop track that had me hooked from the very first moment.

Lyrics of "Never Knows Best – Hell"
I thought we were through this, but we've only taken steps
The foolish way we flirt with death
But I digress
Will we forever be
Taken in by charlatans
We can't help ourselves, can't suss it out
Void of common sense
Is this hell?
We can't find our way out
We built it ourselves
Is anybody else out there?
Now through a glass darkly
Do we peer in the mirror
In its tarnished glint
Do we transmit all our fears
Will we succumb to violence
That's hidden in our tears
Become wanted then, in our own lands
Darkness on our heels
Is this hell?
We can't find a way out
We built it ourselves
Is anybody else out there?
Is this hell
We can't find a way out
We built it ourselves
Is anybody else out there?
Out there
