About 'Hauntology' (official press release)

Swedish haunt­wave artist aux animaux is releas­ing her new EP ”Hauntology”on December 2nd.

Hauntology is a term first used by French phil­iso­ph­er, who Jacques Derrida argued that Marxism would haunt Western soci­ety from bey­ond the grave. In the French, ”haunto­logy” sounds almost identic­al to ”onto­logy”, which is spot on con­sid­er­ing how cap­it­al­ism is the can­cer of human kind. From per­son­al exper­i­ence aux animaux states, ”I tried to com­bine work­ing a full time job with mak­ing music (as a DIY artist), and I quit my job at the end of sum­mer. It’s incred­ible how much my pro­duct­ivy and cre­at­ivy increased since I quit a job that sucked the life out of me.” Hauntology is a term applied to music as well, aux animaux’s music being a kind that influ­ences from revok­ing 80s sound and com­bin­ing that with sounds of her own.

Aside from this, with this par­tic­u­lar release, the artist strives to chal­lenge her­self and step out of her com­fort zone by mak­ing more ”dancy” songs. At the same time, she con­tin­ues to explore the hor­ror genre with this EP. aux animaux draws her inspir­a­tion from both hor­ror films and from hav­ing done a lot of her own shad­ow work espe­cially dur­ing the pan­dem­ic when she sat isol­ated from her social circles. It is about con­front­ing one’s inner demons and accept­ing them. This EP is also a clos­ure to songs that were made dur­ing the pan­dem­ic ”era”. New music expec­ted to arrive in the first half of 2023 will sound dif­fer­ent but still carry aux animaux spe­cif­ic sounds such as dark bass synths, theremin and haunt­ing vocals.

Hauntology con­sists of 4 songs and 4 remixes. The first three songs, Devil inside, Posession and Mara are pro­duced and mixed by the artist her­self, where­as Haunted was co-pro­duced with and mixed by Malmöite dark­wave band abu nein. The remixes are done by Swedish artists, Tobias Bernstrup, Priest (old ghouls of met­al band Ghost) , Majestoluxe, and aux animaux. The mas­ter­ing is done by Doruk Öztürkcan from the epic dark­wave band She Past Away with whom aux animaux has been tour­ing a bunch.
