Sometimes one voice is enough to make an entire genre inter­est­ing to me again – “Crescendo” is just such a song.

I have to be hon­est: I don't always have an easy time with syn­thwave. Especially when the sound seems pre­dict­able or almost oblig­at­or­ily dusty, or even worse, remains purely instru­ment­al, I quickly lose interest. But when I heard “Crescendo” by Action Cop, it was imme­di­ately clear to me – this track is not your typ­ic­al run-of-the-mill syn­thwave. What makes it spe­cial to me is the col­lab­or­a­tion with Selene Calder. Her voice gives the track an emo­tion­al depth that I often miss in many oth­er songs of this kind.

In terms of sound, “Crescendo” is abso­lutely rooted in the syn­thwave cos­mos – retro synths, atmo­spher­ic pads, cine­mat­ic struc­ture. But it is pre­cisely here that the track shows its strength: it plays with the struc­ture, var­ies the per­ceived tem­pos, cre­ates ton­al con­trasts. Instead of mono­ton­ous rip­pling, I get a stead­ily grow­ing ten­sion here, which is lit­er­ally dis­charged in the chorus.

The lyr­ics per­fectly match the mood: a fever­ish romance in the midst of a dysto­pi­an set­ting. Lines like “Crescendo, rising high­er / Love's a fever, we're play­ing with fire” con­vey exactly this feel­ing – a mix­ture of escap­ism and exist­en­tial urgency. To me, the song feels like the soundtrack to a last dance before the down­fall – dra­mat­ic, but nev­er cheesy.

Overall, “Crescendo” is an example of how syn­thwave can work not only styl­ist­ic­ally but also emo­tion­ally – espe­cially when artists like Action Cop have the cour­age to infuse their sound­scape with real soul.
