An epic dance on the ruins of empires
The first few seconds of the song ‘Set Me Free’ from the album ‘Rain of Despair’ remind me of an epic intro to the final battle in a post-apocalyptic film. When the lyrics say "That's how empires all collapse", this image is reinforced. The nostalgic analogue synth sounds could well have come from a current song by the band ‘Meldamor’. So far, so good.
However, there is one small downside for me: the intro before the first vocals start is a little too long for my taste. A shorter radio edit would have been useful here to keep the tension more compact. However, Lisa Cuthbert's vocals are convincing from the start and fit nicely into the dark wave to witch house music genres, creating an exciting contrast. The song itself, however, lies somewhere between cold wave and synth pop.
I especially like the simple but driving beat and the lightness of the melodies and harmonies in the song. The duo from France has created something here that is neither overdone nor overly complex. For me, it's just right for getting straight up on the dance floor.

Lyrics of "Date With Destiny – Set Me Free"
Out on the edge
Past the point where we
Could talk amongst ourselves
And everything was in reach
Maybe its time
We tear ourselves apart
Turn everything we made
Into a distant past
Set me free my love
I don’t want to see the end
Come escape with me
You can’t hold on
To what’s beyond your grasp
To all that should remain
That’s how empires all collapse
Maybe its time
To deceive ourselves again
To block out all the pain
To drift away in dreams
