Girl As Wave – Good Fiction

Witch house vibes meet dark pop melancholy

I'll say it straight out: ‘Good Fiction’ caught me com­pletely off guard. The intro is won­der­fully dark and has a dis­tinct witch house style, but any­one who thinks Girl As Wave would just remain in the dark­ness here is mis­taken. After about 40 seconds, the song changes and glides into a rather calm, mel­an­chol­ic dark pop song.

I find it par­tic­u­larly power­ful how the ten­sion is built up massively again at 1:13 with the drop. The song­writ­ing is clev­er through­out: new ele­ments are con­stantly intro­duced into the oth­er­wise rather calm flow of the song, keep­ing the vari­ety high. The whole thing is car­ried by vocals that strike me as super soft and even a little suf­fer­ing – a com­bin­a­tion that gets under your skin.
