Witch house vibes meet dark pop melancholy
I'll say it straight out: ‘Good Fiction’ caught me completely off guard. The intro is wonderfully dark and has a distinct witch house style, but anyone who thinks Girl As Wave would just remain in the darkness here is mistaken. After about 40 seconds, the song changes and glides into a rather calm, melancholic dark pop song.
I find it particularly powerful how the tension is built up massively again at 1:13 with the drop. The songwriting is clever throughout: new elements are constantly introduced into the otherwise rather calm flow of the song, keeping the variety high. The whole thing is carried by vocals that strike me as super soft and even a little suffering – a combination that gets under your skin.
