A dark synth pulse meets pure energy
When the first bar of "Broken Bucket" begins, I immediately feel that this song doesn't do things by halves. The fast, synth-heavy laser shots that dominate the intro in the first few seconds immediately create an intense tension, almost like a punch in the face. This hectic pace is briefly interrupted before funky guitars temporarily enter the scene. Although I'm not a fan of funk-sounding guitars in electronic music, Hatif uses them so purposefully here that they give the track an additional layer, or rather, I can easily ignore them.
As soon as the guitars fade away, the actual core of ‘Broken Bucket’ unfolds: a brutally driving synth beat that runs through the track like an unstoppable pulse. Hatif manages to maintain the tension with subtle synth lasers and harmonious, gentle vocals, without appearing overloaded.
The vocals are particularly noteworthy. They stand in stark contrast to the hectic, almost aggressive soundscape and give the song a melancholy depth that harmonises wonderfully with the dark synth waves.
Criticism? Perhaps the funk guitars could have been used more sparingly or, for me, left out altogether, but ultimately everything comes together to create a captivating overall picture that stays with you long after you've finished listening.
