Love In Blue: Dark wave in a synth pop guise, just the way I like it
‘Love In Blue’ by Neurotypes hit me right away – as if someone had catapulted the sound of the early 80s into the present. To me, it sounds like a successful fusion of dark wave and synth pop, immediately bringing to mind memories of the early era of The Cure's synth pop (e.g. The Walk) – only in a 2025 version, fresh and precisely produced.
The atmospheric bridge is definitely a highlight of the song for me – here, Neurotypes build up an almost unexpected tension by incorporating drum “n” bass/breakbeat elements. This break keeps me attentive until the very last note.
I think the song manages to achieve exactly the balancing act that many attempt but few pull off with such style: a familiar retro feel with modern production standards and a touch of courage to cross genre boundaries. For me, this works so well because it doesn't come across as a pure nostalgia project, but rather as a further development of the dark wave sound.
If you're into young, dark and melancholic acts like Drab Majesty or Twin Tribes, I think ‘Love In Blue’ is a hot candidate for your playlist. For me, it's a track I wanted to listen to several times straight away.
