Transformation under the cold moonlight
‘Tonight’ by Vioflesh from Chile is a dark, distinctly electronic cold wave track that grabs you right away. Its fantastic dance tempo makes it almost impossible to stand still, while the catchy synth pads and driving beat stick in your head. I would have liked to see a little more dynamic distance between the verse and chorus, simply to emphasise the tension even more – but that hardly detracts from the quality of the song.
Lyrically, ‘Tonight’ paints a mystical picture of shadows, wolves and rebirth – a symbolic night of transformation. The artist himself describes the song as an invocation of nocturnal energy, a ritual of overcoming fear. That's exactly how it sounds: cold, rhythmic, shimmering, with a physical intensity that oscillates somewhere between dark wave pathos and post-punk rawness.
I admit, when I heard ‘Close To Me’ on the self-titled EP ‘Tonight’, I instantly hoped for a The Cure version. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, but maybe Vioflesh will take up the idea sometime?
