Ivy, decay and synths: Apnoie's dark pop moment
To me, Apnoie's song ‘Ivy’ sounds like a mysterious cross between witch house and synth pop. The beats are clear and precise, but as soon as the pads and vocals kick in, I'm reminded more of witch house. To me, it almost seems like a new space in between – perhaps something like ‘witch pop’. It is precisely this mixture that makes the song exciting, because it combines familiar structures with something strange.
The cosy, restrained tempo does not tempt you into ecstatic dancing, but I imagine how this track would suit slow, almost ponderous swaying in a club. Lyrically, ‘Ivy’ remains deep in a world of fog, decay and longing – with images of withering leaves, cold moonlight and a veil of ivy. This poetic darkness draws me in without the song ever losing its clarity.
‘Ivy’ comes from the album ‘Sad Living + Sad Mind’, which provides a delicate, sombre framework overall. I think the track strikes a perfect balance between catchiness and ruin – and is so seductive because it breathes both sides at the same time.

Lyrics of "Apnoie – Ivy"
break me down,
my devotion
I don't care who's next
and my coldness won
mist, leaf fall
ivy covers me
I care even less
and I merge with this moon
why does the end
smells so sweet?
i just smolder
in bad mist
why does the end
smells like flower?
i just smolder
in bad mist
calm me down,
my devotion
my fir wreath is done
and my faintness won
leaves fall low
ivy covers me
so love your black lace
and you won't leave soon
why does the end
smells so sweet?
i just smolder
in bad mist
why does the end
smells like flower?
i just smolder
in bad mist
