Bone-dry EBM beats meet harmonious darkness
The EBM sound and beat are the first things you notice when I play the new track by the Swedish band Armours. It’s strongly reminiscent of the EBM classics of the 1980s like Front 242, DAF and Nitzer Ebb inevitably spring to mind. Bone-dry, metallic, pounding beats, produced authentically using old drum machines in a Stockholm flat, set the tone without compromise. It makes you want to march in square formation on the dance floor straight away.
The vocals are generally a little darker, but take a completely different direction. Whilst the vocal tone reminds me of the band ‘Hatif’, the overall vibe is very harmonious and provides a lovely contrast to the hard-hitting sound, which you wouldn’t have expected beforehand. Lyrically, the exploration of a sorrowful generational shift: “Two generations / The way your body remains”, lends the track a deep, emotional layer.
The song is taken from their eponymous debut EP *Body*, which features five tracks. A strong release from the Swedes and definitely well worth a listen!
