Gentle melancholy: CATBEAR release Darkness
‘Darkness’ by CATBEAR immediately captivated me – not with loud effects, but with its almost relentless and gloomy gentleness.
Even the first notes carry this melancholic undertone, which runs like a red thread (or rather a ‘black thread’) through the entire track. For me, ‘Darkness’ is a ballad that is less dramatically charged and instead unfolds its depth in quiet, gentle gestures. The vocals are soft, almost intimate, as if addressed directly to a specific person. It is precisely this personal touch that moves me, because it sounds so reduced and honest.
Take another look into the darkness,
you will find me out there

I would particularly like to highlight the fact that CATBEAR consistently uses synthesizers here. While their more indie pop-heavy tracks never really appealed to me – these organic sound elements just aren't my thing – ‘Darkness’ is exactly the direction I like so much about them: cold, electronic and therefore crystal clear. The synth arrangement is hypnotic without getting lost in layers.
The lyrics of the song also leave an impression on me. Lines like "Take another look into the darkness, you will find me out there" convey a mixture of comfort and longing that I find powerful.

Lyrics of "CATBEAR – Darkness"
I counted to ten
Just like you said
It comes round in circles
So now where?
I spaced out my breath
I wound the cassette
I waited forever for the end
So take another look into the darkness
You will find me
Out there
Take a little walk into the darkness
Come find me
Out there
When everything is
Overwhelming
Slip further towards her
My alternative
She’s just what you need
What you need to hear
Need to sink in deeper to release
So take another look into the darkness
You will find me
Out there
Take a little walk into the darkness
Come find me
Out there
And in the end we’ll say
We loved who we loved
And in the end we’ll say
I wish I’d felt it more
So take another look into the darkness
You will find me
Out there
Take a little walk into the darkness
Come find me
Out there
So take another look into the darkness
You will find me
Out there
Take a little walk into the darkness
Come find me
Out there
