A straightforward stroke of genius from Color Theory
At last, we have another crisp synth pop track from Color Theory. Fortunately, Brian Hazard has steered clear of grand experiments here and simply goes straight down the middle with “Arm’s Length”. Listening to it, I was immediately reminded of Depeche Mode in the early 80s. Particularly intriguing: vocally and stylistically, I can hear hints of Chris Isaak here and there. It might sound a bit strange at first, but it works brilliantly.
Lyrically, the song explores the painful dynamics of emotional distance. The desperate struggle to keep someone close, yet simultaneously keep them trapped behind an invisible line for one’s own protection.

Lyrics of "Color Theory – Arm's Length"
Cold sheets separate us
Like an unaccepted death
Your skin miles away
But just a fraction of a breath
Brittle bones and bitter blame
We play a hollow, hollow game
To keep my feelings well-contained
At arm's length
A meter of air
At arm's length
I know it’s not fair
Watch your step
Mind the gap
I draw the map to keep you
At arm's length
At arm's length
Once more I’ll crack the door
But I won’t invite you in
Jaw tight, chin to the skies
Never dare to meet your eyes
Count the ceiling tiles, 1–2‑3–4
We don’t talk about the war
To keep myself from wanting more
If I let you in the calm might shatter
If I let you in the glass might crack
I need you near me
But stay behind the line
Measured distance
My insistence
In my defense
Summoning the strength
Safe in this space
Knowing my place
Forever at arm's length
