Dystopian beauty with minor flaws
From the very first second, Soulless' minÂimÂalÂist synth tapÂping capÂtivÂates me. The conÂtrolled tenÂsion that builds up from the sparse sounds has an almost physÂicÂal effect. Added to this is the warm vocals, which lend the othÂerÂwise cool sound strucÂture an emoÂtionÂal depth that is rarely out of place with Matte Blvck.
The synths are trimmed for pure presÂsure and crispÂness, everything sits cleanly, almost surÂgicÂally in the mix. When the voice falls silent, the track transÂforms into a dark, dystoÂpiÂan soundtrack â hauntÂing, but almost too lost in itself. This is where the balÂance tips for me: the lyrÂics remain too thin for me, the instruÂmentÂal secÂtions a little too extenÂded. Soulless is undoubtedly well proÂduced, but for me it ranks among the weakÂer moments in Matte Blvck's othÂerÂwise impressÂively coherÂent repertoire.
