Normoria – Jezebel

A dark seduction in the perfect Halloween guise

The month of October is prac­tic­ally cry­ing out for the per­fect soundtrack, and with ‘Jezebel’, Normoria from Sweden deliv­er just the right dose of dark music for the Halloween sea­son. What imme­di­ately strikes me as a pos­it­ive when listen­ing is that the met­al influ­ence which had crept into their sound in recent years has all but van­ished here, or at least receded so dis­creetly into the back­ground that I’m not shed­ding any tears over it, espe­cially as I nev­er really got much out of those for­ays any­way. Instead, the band quietly bridges the gap between clas­sic dark wave and driv­ing future pop. I’ll delib­er­ately leave it open as to wheth­er this sym­bi­os­is works per­fectly every single second, but I cel­eb­rate the end res­ult as a con­sist­ently strong track.

Lyrically, the band focuses on an ice-cold seductress who, like a cun­ning viper, drives lonely souls mad and drags her vic­tims from the heights of heav­en straight down to hell (with a wink, the lyr­ics are almost in the style of power met­al). My only reser­va­tion con­cerns Angel Moonshine’s vocals. I would have liked a touch more acous­tic under­pin­ning in the mas­ter­ing, even though I much prefer this nat­ur­al pres­ence to over-the-top gimmicks.
