Try to imagine a musical child of early 80s naive Depeche Mode sounds and early 2000s electroclash ala Chicks On Speed. Sounds totally crazy, doesn't it? The song 'Swerve' by the Canadian band 'Sun Streak' links these two genre worlds effortlessly and it sounds exactly as described, yet somehow independent. This song is the opener of the 5‑track EP 'EP' (?).
It is obvious that the artwork is a homage or declaration of love to 80s pop art and appeals to the right target group. 1 extra point for this! Lyrics of 'Sun Streak – Swerve'
Driving backwards in a cul-de-sac
How can we get anywhere going in circles?
Your hand reaches for the back of my neck
You laugh a little, and I scrape the curb
You said “if you stay in your lane, I’ll stay in mine”
As your head rests on my thigh
You said “if you stay in your lane, I’ll stay in mine”
Your hand sails through the wind with rise and decline
I want to move forward, but the pattern’s ardy locked
So I open my windows and inch my hand closer
Your eyes are reaching for the back of my throat
If you can drive in such a straight line then why did you swerve?
Sun Streak about 'Swerve'
The humble, almost janky verses let the hook take you by surprise. Swerve is a song about the difficulties of navigating a queer relationship with someone who is not out. Getting mixed signals from someone who insists that she is straight, but who’s actions with you prove otherwise. The car is the vehicle for describing these feelings, in a nod to Gary Numan.
