A longing for authenticity
A song that gets right under your skin from the very first second. With ‘NDRI’, Some Days Are Darker present an incredibly emotional track that gripped me straight away. Sonically, the US trio take a rather subdued yet immensely dense direction, underpinned by a subtle, shadowy dark wave influence. I’m particularly fascinated by the cleverly placed breaks and bridges, they lend the track a wonderful dynamic and divide the composition acoustically, as if into masterfully written chapters.
Hovering above this sombre yet elegant synth pop backdrop are the clearly articulated vocals, whose gentle and soothing sound provide the perfect counterpoint. Lyrically, the song revolves around the painful longing for authenticity and the inner conflict between emotional numbness and pure, visceral feeling. The line ‘The things we desire in life are the same things that destroy us’ sums up this fascination perfectly. For me, ‘NDRI’ is an all-round successful, atmospheric masterpiece.

Lyrics of "Some Days Are Darker – NDRI"
she painted her eyes with gold
flowers adorned the walls
in the room we shared
so physical
she watches me come undone
I try to be like a stone
but I crave her touch
so visceral
endlessly trying to tame
something that can’t be contained
all that we ever want
all that we ever need
all that we ever want
is to feel
anything
all that we ever want
all that we ever need
as to feel
something real
or not to feel
anything at all
I want her all to myself
I’m thinking of nothing else
and the lines we’ve drawn
invisible
her body becomes so warm
my mind is a raging storm
and the moves we make
are magical
the things we desire in life
are the same things that destroy us
that’s the beauty
all that we want
all that we need
is just to feel
