A journey into the self: ColdApollo's synth pop anthem ‘Those Who Care’
Sometimes I hear a song and I just know: this one will stay with me. That's exactly how I felt about ColdApollo's ‘Those Who Care’. This melancholic synth pop track from Romania had me hooked from the first second. The intro? Typical 80s, with analogue synthesiser sounds that reminded me directly of old classics – only with a modern twist. The many wobble sounds and the carefully applied stereo effects create a fascinating depth.
What particularly inspires me is the harmony that ColdApollo unleashes here. The soft voice perfectly conveys the emotional intensity of the song and spontaneously reminded me of Ben Ivory's ‘The Righteous Ones’.
The lyrics – reduced but poetic – emphasise the feeling of self-discovery that the artist is also describing: a balancing act between vulnerability and determination.
I'll be honest, though: an electric guitar comes in at 2:34 that somehow feels out of place to me. I would have liked to have heard something a bit more subtle, but that's just my personal opinion. That being said, the song remains an almost perfect synth pop anthem. For fans of melancholy electronic music with a nostalgic 80s flair, ‘Those Who Care’ is an absolute must.
