Inaugural – Nightclub

A fresh fusion of dark wave and electroclash

"Nightclub" by Inaugural is a track that com­bines dark wave and elektro­clash in a min­im­al­ist and fresh sound­scape. What con­vinced me imme­di­ately is the way the elec­tron­ic ele­ments merge cleanly yet power­fully. The addi­tion­al pinch of min­im­al elec­tro gives the song a hyp­not­ic, rhythmic char­ac­ter that works won­der­fully on the dance floor. This mix­ture def­in­itely has the poten­tial to appeal to both lov­ers of clas­sic dark wave sounds and those who like it min­im­al­ist and dance­able at the same time.

The vocal per­form­ance is par­tic­u­larly suc­cess­ful. The duo com­ple­ment each oth­er per­fectly and deliv­er a vocal har­mony that car­ries the song without being too intrus­ive. However, I have to say that the lyr­ics are a bit too con­cise. More depth would have been desir­able here to give the track a great­er emo­tion­al range. For me, how­ever, "Nightclub" is not neces­sar­ily a pure listen­ing exper­i­ence, but will only unfold its full effect in the con­text of a dark, wave-inspired club night.

The art­work of the single is also worth a look. It reminds me a lot of The Cure's "Wish" era, albeit with a dark­er touch. This ref­er­ence to the aes­thet­ics of dark wave under­lines the over­all char­ac­ter of the track and cre­ates a visu­al com­ple­ment to the music­al content.
