Gates by The Oblivion Chapel opens dark doors
When listening to ‘Gates’ by The Oblivion Chapel, I am immediately overcome by this feeling of 90s alternative — a sound that seems familiar and fresh at the same time. The vocals carry exactly that distinctive, melancholic mood we know from the great alternative bands of that era. With her deep contralto range, the singer creates an impressive contrast within herself — as if two voices were in dialogue. A dark gate suddenly opens, and the song shifts into a gothic vibe with a clearly perceptible dark wave pulse.
What particularly grabs me are the bells in the middle. They reinforce this sombre, sacred moment and fit the title perfectly. The band cites Blaqk Audio, IAMX, Depeche Mode and Sisters of Mercy as comparisons – and even if they're not quite in that league yet for me, they're definitely heading in the right direction. Let's just say I appreciate their ambitions. The bridge with its almost Gregorian-inspired choir singing briefly reminds me of ‘Sadeness’ by Enigma and gives me that brief moment of goosebumps that I love so much.

Lyrics of "The Oblivion Chapel – Gates"
He's been swallowing those keys
Been checking all your chains
Forgetting all your names
We've been picking at those teeth
Been hearing your refrains
The notes are all the same
Found out this iron draws out the sound
How he made you bow
Run away, shout
His blood is in your mouth
Cold, dead
We stole the crown off of his head
Now burn it down
Locked away no more
The gates are open now
Dreams been spiraling in scenes
Been drinking all their lies
Your faith coming untied
Drowned out, commanding tongues have found out
Converted all their spies
The execution's nigh
Reaping what they sowed in ruling
Centuries of blood imbruing
Wings returned and souls renewing
Gates are open now
Reaping what they sowed in ruling
Centuries of blood imbruing
Wings returned and souls renewing
Gates are open now
Found out this iron draws out the sound
How he made you bow
Run away, shout
His blood is in your mouth
Cold, dead
We stole the crown off of his head
Now burn it down
Locked away no more
The gates are open now
