Fresh vocals instead of a soundscape: My surprising listening experience with Vioflesh

When I first heard ‘Call Me’ by Vioflesh, the track really took me by sur­prise at first. It simply doesn’t sound like a typ­ic­al track from this Chilean dark and cold wave pro­ject, at least if I take their last ten releases as a bench­mark. Instead of the usu­al dense and dark sound­scape, what I’m presen­ted with here is a sound that’s notice­ably more defined and clearly struc­tured.

In keep­ing with the almost vul­ner­able lyr­ics “If you hear my silence, I’ll exist again”, the stripped-back arrange­ments leave more space for the vocals, which strike me as notice­ably fresh­er and more har­mo­ni­ous. The whole thing is under­pinned by a melody that comes across as almost naively play­ful and delib­er­ately breaks with past expect­a­tions. Personally, I par­tic­u­larly like this song, as it’s closer to clas­sic synth pop than any oth­er track the band has released so far. A truly power­ful, unex­pec­ted move.
