Retro melancholy for the heart
Nobody Loves You begins with the nostalgic insertion of a cassette tape – this brief moment alone immediately evokes memories of times gone by. No sooner has the tape been ‘loaded’ than a classic bassline kicks in, and from then on it's one thing after another. The vocals begin at the ten-second mark, followed by the first real highlight just twenty seconds later: the chorus. Catchy, concise and instantly recognisable. The melody is more than just a hook for the ear – it is the trademark of the song and carries that bittersweet glamour that is immediately recognisable in Blackbook.
The song seems to be designed for radio and dance floors alike, with a beat that simply won't let me sit still. At the same time, beneath all the energy, I sense a breeze of melancholy that fits the lyrics perfectly. ‘Nobody loves you like I do’ – it sounds like a bleak realisation that turns into something comforting as soon as it dissolves into the chorus.
Blackbook once again manage to combine emotion with rhythm without pathos or unnecessary drama. A song that feels comfortable in its retro shell yet remains completely contemporary – brilliantly produced, clearly structured and with that mixture of longing and drive that immediately captivates me.
