Self-created shackles with a dark soul
‘My Own Design’ by Madeline Goldstein immediately captivates me with its rich synth soundscape – it feels like a rejuvenation for synth pop, somewhere between the old school and the spirit of young bands like ‘Veil Of Light’. For me, this is one of her strongest tracks to date: the song has a catchy feel to it, but always remains dark and driving, never settling for smooth pop for a second.
When I listen to it, I can literally feel the urgency that Goldstein puts into every line – the lyrics tell of inner turmoil and self-doubt, and "A prison by my own design" sticks in my mind. The combination of intense synth sound, catchy hooks and dark restlessness makes the song an absolute highlight for my next personal synth pop playlist.

Lyrics of "Madeline Goldstein – My Own Design"
Im nervous
I can’t detect what’s right or real
The surface
To keep my end up of the deal
Regardless
Of what I say I’m never here
It’s hopeless
To tell you how I really feel
Oooo ahh ahh ahh
Oooo ahh ahh ahh
Ooo a ha a ha a ha a
I’m helpless
A state that I cannot explain
Expect this
Remind me who’s the one to blame?
I resent this !
A prison by my own design
It’s endless
In fear that I have lost my mind
Oooo ahh ahh ahh
Oooo ahh ahh ahh
Ooo a ha a ha a ha a
I’m fine
A prison by my own design
It’s mine
Just wait for my stars to align!
And if I stay?
Will I forget the the way I felt today?
Deliver to myself or walk away?
Remember me for who I am right here,
Relinquish me from all my chains of fear
