Cold Breath and Dark Desire
I’ve been listening to the new single ‘Cold Breath’ by Celestial Hex, and the track kicks off straight away with a brisk gallop in the bassline that conjures up a truly eerie atmosphere. What strikes me immediately: the breathy vocals lean almost towards Witch House, yet the Dark Wave note remains unmistakable throughout.
The synthesizers here are perfectly woven into the Dark Wave sound, expertly balancing with the guitars and the rather organic drums. It’s that specific ‘Vampiric Wave’ vibe, as the band themselves describe it, inspired by film classics like Near Dark and The Lost Boys. Every now and then, Celestial Hex scatter haunting samples like a scream, which gives the whole thing a proper dose of the creeps. Fittingly, the lyrics deal with the shame of one's own actions (‘I’m ashamed of what I’ve done’) while the blood symbolically runs dry.
The track, taken from the 8‑track mini-album ‘Nightshades’, would definitely work brilliantly on any Halloween playlist. Once you’re caught in the spell of this German outfit, there’s no getting away.
