Old-school EBM beat, new ambitions
To be honest, apart from a few exceptions, not much has really changed for me in the EBM scene over the last few decades. Silberwolf 66 really blew me away with “Cursed”. The beat is proper old-school EBM, but the structure sounds new and fresh. With its melodic, never aggressive vocals, what appear to be film samples and sonic tributes to great role models (Depeche Mode, Apoptygma Berzerk to name a few), the track never becomes monotonous, and certainly not boring.
The inspiration from Front 242 and Frontline Assembly is clearly audible, wrapped up in a dystopian vision of humanity enslaved by machines. Sonically, at times I was even reminded of Beborn Beton’s “Tybalt” (1993). It’s great to see that EBM can still be taken to new heights. I’d love to hear more of these danceable tracks with depth.
