Analogue warmth meets the dark side of the soul
Right from the very first listen, the warm, analogue synth sound on ‘Shadow Aspect’ by Tomorrows Letters immediately appealed to me. The Belarusian artist deliberately eschews digital sterility and, using vintage hardware, real drums and a hand-played bass, creates an organic depth that is rarely found these days. Carried by a melancholic foundation in a measured mid-tempo, a classic 80s synth pop sound unfolds, to which breathy vocal parts lend a fittingly sombre dark wave touch.
Theme-wise, the song delves into the deeper layers of the Jungian psyche. In the lyrics, a stranger wanders through his own skin like a ghost in a mirror image, until the metaphor of the shadow self becomes tangible. An atmospheric, handcrafted statement that completely draws me in.

Lyrics of "Tomorrows Letters – Shadow Aspect"
Hear the stranger at the door
He is walking past my heart
He is slipping through my skin
Like water on the sand
Like a ghost in my reflection
He is my dark projection
He is the mirror in me
And he will always be
My shadow aspect
My shadow self
The stranger at my door
Unconscious reflex
Deep in the well
Of all of my shadow selves
I hear the stranger at the door
He is moving up my spine
He is resting on my shoulder
Like a dark blue dove
My shadow aspect
My shadow self
The stranger at my door
Unconscious reflex
Deep in the well
Of all of my shadow selves
I hear the stranger at the door
He is knocking with his fist
Like thundering on my bones
Like someone I wouldn't want to be
My shadow aspect
My shadow self
The stranger at my door
Unconscious reflex
Deep in the well
Of all of my shadow selves
