Synth Pop Battle Jacket – When black elegance meets pure band culture

Synth Pop Battle Jacket – When black elegance meets pure band culture

Why didn't we do this sooner? Introducing the ‘Synth Pop Battle Jacket’ – the perfect fusion of black elegance and band culture for the synth pop scene.

Sometimes the best ideas arise from a simple question: ‘Why isn't this available in our scene?’.

I've been part of the black scene for almost 40 years now. I've seen trends come and go, but one thing has almost always remained constant: we love elegance, mostly black, and we value aesthetics. Of course, we have this fascinating ‘black and colourful mix’ of military, cyber, Cure heads and many other styles.

But while metalheads proudly wear their ‘battle jackets’ (cowls) with colourful patches of their favourite bands, this look has been largely absent from synth pop and dark wave. Last year, I decided to change that. I present: the synth pop battle suit jacket – or, in short, the battle blazer. What do you think, which name fit better?

The vision: elegance meets fan culture

The challenge was clear: a classic denim jacket doesn't quite fit the vibe of a synth pop concert or a dark wave festival. We needed something that retained the community spirit of the Battle Jacket but visually fit into our world.

The solution? A black suit jacket. It's the perfect canvas: it looks smarter than a waistcoat, stays true to the black aesthetic and offers enough space for a visual tribute to our heroes.

From idea to prototype

For my first attempt, I bought a simple, inexpensive suit jacket. I generally recommend this to everyone before sacrificing an expensive designer piece for the experiment. However, the real work began with the search for the right patches.

The treasure hunt for the right merch

While you can find patches for giants like Depeche Mode or The Sisters of Mercy on every corner, the search for patches for smaller underground bands or synth pop/electro pop bands in general is like a real treasure hunt. For example, I'm still looking for patches for Pet Shop Boys, Camouflage or Ladytron. I sincerely hope that a market will develop for these.

An open appeal to the bands: Please fill your merch stores with patches! At the last concerts by Solar Fake and Priest, I finally found what I was looking for – a step in the right direction.

My current shopping tip: I found what I was looking for at the online shop Nuclear Waste (This is not a paid advertisement!). The selection there is phenomenal, even if you have to be patient when searching and waiting for delivery. In terms of price, I ended up paying around €60 for all my patches, including shipping – a fair price for a unique item.

Baptism of fire at the Amphi Festival 2025

My Synth Pop Battle Jacket celebrated its premiere at the Amphi Festival 2025 in Cologne. To be honest, I was excited (and a little nervous) to see how the scene would react to this mix of styles.

The feedback was overwhelming. I was asked about the jacket countless times and received consistently positive responses. It seems as if the scene had been waiting for just this to express their love for their bands in a new, stylish way. Will this develop into a lasting trend? Only time will tell.

Be part of the movement!

This post is a call to action: Let's make the synth pop battle jacket an integral part of our culture! I want to inspire you to pick up a needle yourself or ask your local tailor for help. It's incredibly fun to immortalise your own music history on fabric.

Show off your creations: Have you already made something similar? Send me pictures of your suit jacket! I would love to publish them here on Electrozombies.

The next level: My suit jacket is far from finished. The next stage of development, with rhinestone appliqués and additional patches, is already in the works.

See you at the next concert – hopefully in your personal synth pop battle jacket!
