The best Depeche Mode tribute in 2021

2021 is apparently the year of Depeche Mode cover compilations. But for the band’s 40th birthday, that has to be the case. Let’s see if we come up with something special for the 50th in 2031.

The following Depeche Mode tribute compilation ‘Breathing In Fumes’ by Infacted Recordings is also extraordinary. This is not just an ordinary cover compilation, rather the concept is new (at least for me).  As a die hard Depeche Mode fan, you should be familiar with the name of the remixer ‘Dominatrix’. I’ve known Dominatrix for what feels like an eternity and once designed some artwork for his Kernfusion series. Unfortunately, after the closure of an insider Depeche Mode forum, we somehow lost track of each other. I am a big fan of his Depeche Mode remixes and ‘Dominatrix’ is for me one of the best remixers in the DM scene.

The new cover concept

What is the concept of the cover compilation of ‘Breathing in Fumes – An Infactious Tribute to Depeche Mode’? ‘Dominatrix’ has musically rebuilt all the songs respectively covered them instrumentally. In collaboration with Torben Schmidt from Infacted Recordings, artists were then selected to add vocals to these tracks. That alone sounds like an interesting approach to me. In addition, the vocal parts were sung by well-known scene bands, including Orange Sector, Lights Of Euphoria, FORM, Binary Park, Endanger, J:Dead, Michigan, Ion Javelin, The Saint Paul, Frame Of Mind and Namnamblu.

First of all, the cover compilation sounds simply fantastic! One of the strengths is certainly the consistent quality and stringency of the music. It sounds like it was forged from a single mould and I think that’s really successful on ‘Breathing in Fumes – An Infactious Tribute to Depeche Mode’. What I noticed while listening is that you hear “new tracks” that you can sing along with right away, because the lyrics are familiar. Nevertheless, every song on the tribute compilation is fresh and sounds like 2021. The album artwork is also praiseworthy. If a Depeche Mode fan sees loudspeakers standing in the landscape, then he or she knows what to expect from the release.

I have only one criticism to make of this almost perfect compilation. I have already mentioned this in my radar of the tribute compilation ‘40 Years – A Special Tribute To Depeche Mode‘. Unfortunately, once again only songs from the first 13 years are on it. But the band has much more to offer than the nostalgic songs of the 80s. I really hope for a sequel that will cover the other decades. Apart from that, ‘Breathing in Fumes – An Infactious Tribute to Depeche Mode’ is an absolute recommendation.
